South Orange

South Orange is a beautiful town and home to about 17,000 people. A walk through South Orange will have you reminiscing as you enjoy the small town atmosphere that has been maintained in South Orange, right down to its gas street lighting. Despite this sense of nostalgia, South Orange is a modern and vibrant and community, with a bustling downtown that offers many shopping and dining options and is also noted for its more “urban vibe”, which makes recently relocated city people feel more at home. 

Beautiful homes in a host of styles, from summer cottages to Victorians, Colonial Revivals, Tudors and Renaissance Revivals play a large role in creating demand in South Orange’s real estate market. Many homes date back to the turn of the century. A sister community to Maplewood, South Orange shares an excellent school system with Maplewood comprised of six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. South Orange’s well-respected Columbia High School offers advanced placement, college prep and vocational courses, classes in filmmaking and journalism, 25 clubs, and 23 varsity sports. 

Recreation is paramount to South Orange residents as well, with the town providing five baseball diamonds, 15 lighted tennis courts, a soccer field, a duck pond, and multiple playgrounds. The Baird Community Center offers a never-ending list of art and recreational opportunities to its residents. On November 3, 2006, the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC)opened its doors to the public, permanently changing the scene in South Orange and adding to the landscape of arts leaders in New Jersey. 

The South Orange Property Re-Assessment has been completed for 2017. Proposed new assessments, as well as other pertinent information, can be viewed at the Tax Assessor in South Orange.
